Speech Language Pathologist
An SLP, or Speech Therapist, specializes in the treatment of communication, voice and swallowing disorders.
Our Speech Therapists aim to improve speech and swallowing difficulties using a combination of evidence-based techniques and technologies. Speech Therapy at ATC is focused on maximizing individuals’ communicative potential, achieving client specific goals and promoting meaningful change in the lives of our clients.
The Communication Strategies Training Program program is designed to help individuals with “Aphasia” or difficulty expressing themselves following a stroke. Clients and their communication partner learn strategies to help overcome communication barriers. In some cases, clients are also given the opportunity to explore technologies that may further assist with communication.
Speech therapists assess clients’ abilities to eat and drink safely and efficiently. Clients are provided with recommendations to optimize safe and adequate intake. Our Speech Therapists will often work closely with our Registered Dietitian using an integrated approach to individualize clients’ nutritional and swallowing needs. In some cases, our Speech Therapists will refer clients for specialized swallowing x-rays or other tests and services.
The Voice Program is designed to help individuals who experience difficulties with voice projection, “mumbling” or generally reduced speech clarity. Through intense respiratory and vocal exercise, clients have the ability to achieve their optimal speaking potential.
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is the use of aids or tools to improve an individuals’ ability to communicate when natural speech or writing is not easily understood. These aids are diverse and may include everything from simple boards or books to extensive and integrated computerized devices. Our Speech Therapists work with other members of our AAC team in overcoming obstacles to find unique and innovative ways for clients to use their computers and communicate effectively.
The Memory and Language Program is designed to help individuals who experience difficulties expressing their thoughts clearly, finding the words they want to say, and remembering new information. Clients learn about environmental or lifestyle factors that may impact memory & communication, and are given the opportunity to practice strategies that promote communicative independence.
